She's ARRIVED!!

HENNY's day has finally arrived!  She's officially hitting the bookstore shelves today!
And to herald her in, Mr. Schu is posting an interview as well as premiering her video trailer on his blog Watch. Connect. Read. (http://mrschureads.blogspot.com/2014/01/book-traier-premiere-henny.html)     Pop on over, in HENNY's honor, and take a gander-- you can even see her in her debut dress ;)

Thank you, everyone, for supporting HENNY over the last couple of years!
You are, one and all, simply awesome!  xxoo

The Debut(ante)

HENNY is making her debut in a little over three weeks!
She is madly thinking about her debut ensemble.
So far, she's picked a delicate tulle dress (sleeveless, of course) with tiny flowers:
Next up, lest she get chilly (it will be January, after-all), she's thinking of a red fur-trimmed coat with coordinating hat and muff.  Henny feels it's important  they match her wattles.
As we draw closer to the BIG DAY (January 7th),
I will try and keep up with updates about Henny's fashion choices.
She does want to impress  ;)

HENNY (Simon & Schuster) will hit bookstores January 7, 2014.
Click here to order your signed copy (indicate in the comments section at checkout that you would like it signed).
I say, "Thank you"--Henny says, "Bwwwaaak!" (which is Chicken for "Thank you!")

Creepy Chicken

As we draw closer to Henny's release, the book buzz is starting to happen!

So far Henny has been referred to as--- cute, creepy, adorable, unconventional, humorous,
weird (in a good way), and precious. . .
but best of all:
Henny has been selected by the American Booksellers Association as a "Kids' Indie Next List" pick!
This means a bookseller nominated Henny, then ABA members voted and selected it as a recommended book for booksellers across the country to put in their stores.
 How cool is THAT??!!

...and remember:
HENNY is available just about anywhere, but if you would like a signed copy, order through
Secret Garden Books (in the comments section at checkout say you would like it signed).
Oh, and if you're in Seattle, please come to Henny's launch party at the Secret Garden Bookstore on January 7th at 7p.m.  Bwwaaak!

Remember-- support your local independent bookstores !
                          Thanks, everyone!

The Agony of Print

Greetings, All!
I've had my nose to the promotional grindstone, so to speak, as time gets closer and closer to HENNY's release, and I apologize again for still being so woefully behind in all things bloggie--mine, yours, and everyone elses!
Lately, I've been doing battle with new business cards and promotional cards.  The process always starts out with a certain excitement, then transcends to angst over size, paper, cost, design, etc. -- then bounces back to excitement once they're finished.
I had three sets of cards made:  one sporting the cover and a spread from HENNY-- same image that's in the SCBWI Illustrator Exhibit (postcard size), and the other heralding the launch date for the book (business card size). Then I had a set of five alternating layouts made up for my business cards. SO glad they're done!  What do you think?

"You Gotta Love the Weird"

Henny 2014: Its Never Too Early to Get Excited

I'm so pleased to report that HENNY just got a shout-out from the New York Public Library's

Henny is clapping her little hands in delight!

Here's what Ms. Bird wrote about the bird in question ;) --

"HENNY by Elizabeth Rose Stanton . . .
because sometimes you gotta love the weird. Weird is easy to write but hard to do well. This book is about a chicken with human arms. To those of you who are instantly interested, this one’s for you. It is done exceedingly well."

This hopefully bodes well for the future of our fine feathered-and-armed (in a good way) friend! Be sure to click the Fuse #8 link to see some of the other really fun-looking 2014 books Betsy highlighted :)

And here's a gentle reminder-- to get your very own copy of HENNY, you can order** from: amazon, Barnes and Noble and, best of all, your own independent bookstore*.

*If you would like a signed copy, I will post the direct link as soon as the order function is up-and-running at The Secret Garden Bookshop here in Seattle.  Stay tuned!  :)

**Remember, pre-orders count!  (Click HERE to find out why).

Henny and I thank you from the bottom of our hearts! xxoo

HENNY'S UP!!

HENNY'S gone live!

I just discovered (literally, since they don't tell you) that  HENNY is now up for pre-order!  It was super exciting to type in the title and have her pop up.  One more step closer to reality! Yay!

Simon & Schuster

Amazon

Barnes & Noble

And, of course, don't forget to ask about it at your local independent bookstore!
My favorite, here in Seattle, is Secret Garden Books (and they ship)  :-)

Henny sends big hugs to everyone!

Refresh-ing

Henny, having heard about all the hot weather her friends are having to endure, decided to put her bikini back on and try for a little dip.  She also likes this idea because the Illustration Friday theme for the week is "refresh."  Should she decide to jump in here in the still chilly NW, I think she will find herself more than refreshed...
Hmmm...do chickens get goosebumps?

Illustration Friday- "kernel"

Henny freaked out a little when she heard what this week's Illustration Friday topic is.
I assured her there wasn't a kernel of truth to it.

Twirl, as in, WAVE

The IF topic for the week is "Twirl"  I have a character named Henny--who happens to be a chicken born with arms.  Henny worries about it...but then realizes that having arms isn't so bad after all. She comes to see that this odd twist of fate offers her opportunities not possible, otherwise ;)
For example, one of the things Henny realizes she can do with arms is...

...wave like the Queen!

And so, dear readers, I will see you next week.
Henny and I are off to the SCBWI conference in
New York!
We twirl our arms in farewell for now --
just like the Queen ;)

More Henny

I'm loving the comments on Henny and her arms!  Yes, the possibilities are endless (and yes, Melissa, this is an idea I have for a book about just such things... :) )
So, unfortunately, methinks this is one of the first things Henny would have to do with her arms.  O poor Henny!

Not-MY-Art, or Ridiculously Sublime

(My very first post featuring not-MY-art)
Recently, I was in a store that gives the shopper that "third-world-experience" kind of feeling--when I saw her.  I think it was the banana tail feathers that first caught my eye. I picked her up. Her dangly legs clacked away as I turned her every which way, marveling at the visual feast in my hands. The fruit chicken: the ultimate in kitchen kitsch and definitely campy, cheap, and undoubtedly made in China.  I almost bought her but was afraid TheArchitect might toss the two of us out. She would undoubtedly NOT be his idea of a
must-have for the modern kitchen. Oh, but I was so sorely tempted!
I draw some pretty strange things sometimes, but I'm not sure even I could have thought her up.  Really...a chicken with strawberries for legs--sitting on her big old tomato of a duff?!  So ridiculous...it's sublime!

AND, it gets better! She has a friend: Ol' Lemon Legs.
(and I'm still laughing)
