Probably more than you'll ever want to know... ;)

It was a fun interview to do, and hat's off to Kathy Temean and her marvelously comprehensive and informative blog, "Writing and Illustrating-Sharing Information About Writing and Illustrating for Children" !
You already know that I love your work. What I didn't know is how much work there is involved in creating it. Stupid of me, of course, no seriously creative person can manage without the 90% perspiration, although the talent itself has to be there from the beginning.
ReplyDeleteYou have produced some wonderful characters, I particularly enjoy the grim (and Grimm) images. but only now I realise that years of application are behind what seems so effortless.
You have made me realise something: I must be more patient in my puny efforts at writing, that words, sentences, paragraphs and chapters do not simply flow from the pen, fully formed and faultless, but that the process is complicated and painstaking.
Lizzie! Is that you?!? Ah, I'm all excited at seeing your beautiful face for the first time! About to hop over to your interview.
ReplyDeleteNot, more than I ever wanted to know that's for sure. I loved the post and learning more about you and how you work and create. Also, congratulations on finding Nancy Coffey, or her finding you. It sounds like a great agency and how ideal to have Nancy working with you as you need her. What I love most of all about your work is your great humor and how you incorporate it into art. Some of it would fit quite well into The New Yorker.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to just reproduce the comment I left on your interviewer's blog. I am so gratified to have been able to watch your story unfold:
ReplyDeleteIn these sorts of interviews, there is always the subtle assumption that some sort of secret can be passed on by the interviewee — who has achieved success — and those who trail her in their own dreams. With Elizabeth Stanton, what you have is a combination of talent — which is a gift, skill — which is developed and street smarts — which include determination, hunger and, yes, wisdom.
She has fully merited this stage in her development as an artist and all its attendant recognition — and yet, I am certain it is only a beginning (of sorts.)
It’s the kind of beginning for which years of foundations have been painstakingly laid. When I read,
‘Fortunately, I got in.’
I laughed and thought, ‘damn straight!’
Our girl Lizzie is a gem.
Oh, what a bonus to find this, today! I've wondered where you 'come from' - your humour and style... it couldn't possibly just have sprung out of the ground. but, boy, talk about a lot of soul searching... talk about a journey.... talk about honing in on what you love to do.... I am so pleased for you!!! =D Thanks for sharing yourself with us (and I'm not only speaking of the interview... =])
ReplyDeleteBest wishes!
Katy xo
Oh, and - three kids! heh heh heeeeeehhhh.... =D
ReplyDeleteThat was fun to read!
ReplyDeleteI noticed you have a relative to Yorick on your desk.
Alas, I once took delivery of a real Yorick who spent his
days in a punchbowl box and it wasn't even Halloween.
Great interview! Always interesting to read about one's 'idols'! (LOL)
