For those of you who saw my post about Julia and her hat, here she is again, slightly more refined. Since the Illustration Friday topic this week is "Tall," I thought this new little rendering of her fit the bill quite nicely.
Julia is finding that the world goes all soft and quiet when she puts the hat on.
It also it makes her feel a bit taller. She finds this combination most satisfying.
She is, however, still oblivious to her hitchhiker ;)
I'm kind of partial to this new version of her. What do you think?
It's the bird's eye view that comes with height!
ReplyDeleteShe's PERFECT! The stance, the expression! Just perfect!
ReplyDeleteThank you, dear R. It means a lot that you think so :)
DeleteOh Elizabeth, SHE IS JUST DARLING!!! Ohhhh, I am working on my illustrations. Can you believe that I am treading waters that I never have before in art? I could NOT for the life of me figure out why I cannot get a certain style down to communicate what I want. Well, a dear blogger pal suggested I used another type of pen/pencil...SHE WAS RIGHT! I love how you can get a sketch done so beautifully with pencil, then with pen, get a totally different feel. The suggestion I got was to use charcoal and I think my friend is totally right. The ethereal look I want just won't happen with pen.
ReplyDeleteAND thank you my dear for letting me know that Count Sealyham was considered as a sweetheart birthday card!!!! teehee....he just happens to be my husband's favorite, and thanks to you, he has been sold in one order. But others just have not found the charm in him yet. I so appreciate your support!
LOVELY DRAWING, as always, and your work emulates a very clear feeling of professional quality, WHIMSEY, JOY and HEART!!
Have a grand Saturday! Anita
I totally agree about getting such different results-- depending on the instrument. After you are finished playing with charcoal, try pastel pencils. I think you would love them. Thanks for your kind comment about my little Julia and her special hat :)

Julia returns!!
ReplyDeleteYes! Glad you remember her :) ;)
Deleteshe's cute, I like her hat and obviously she does too :-)
ReplyDeleteJulia is very fond of her found hat. Glad you think she's cute...thanks, Nelleke!
DeleteShe has that happy and smug satisfaction in knowing that she is a trend-setter, and that -given time - the whole world will follow. She is certainly making her way in this 'world' ...nice one :0)
ReplyDeleteYou are quite right about Julia, John. She really doesn't care what anyone thinks. She is definitely in her own little world :) Thanks!
DeleteI like to know that her world goes all soft and quiet when she puts this special hat.
ReplyDeleteI wished I had a hat like this to use sometimes?! :D
I love the details on Julia and on the hat. The hat is really creative :) and Julia is a sweetie! :)
Beautiful!
I, too, wish I had a "Julia hat." Put it on, and make the world go away :)
DeleteThanks, and I'm so glad you like her!
Thank you for another Julis drawing! I'm a big fan of her and I hoped that you would draw more of her. I understand why she wears thar hat, the world is much to loud and hard! she is very refreshing to this world!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Celine! I hope I can draw more of her soon :)
DeleteMaybe I can if I wear her hat ;)
Brings tears to my eyes - so much beautiful, innocent pride in her comical appearance. Axxx
ReplyDeleteAnnie! Thank you so much for this wonderful comment. I'm so glad you see her character so clearly!
DeleteShe's so cute:)Love her and her hat:)
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, M. !!
DeleteVery endearing!
ReplyDeleteHer cuteness actually kind of surprised me :) Glad you find her endearing.
DeleteI think this is totally charming. I love the fresh expression on her face.
ReplyDeleteYes, she has that look of innocence...kind of oblivious to the absurdity of the hat!
DeleteThanks!
I love Julia. She wears that hat like nobody is watching! In her own little insane world, for a sane person would not wear it. She has the world just right and for one so young, we can all learn a lesson from Julia. Dance like no one is watching, love like you've never been hurt and wear a crazy hat like you don't give a damn! Love it.

xxxxxxx
Di...you got it so right!! :)
DeleteThank you!
Very cute. I think I need a cool hat. Love your Leonardo drawing too.
ReplyDeleteHey, Linda! Thanks so much. I want a cool hat, too...and I'm glad you like my Leo knockoff :)
DeleteOh my goodness, Julia is just darling! The birdie peeking out of the top is so cute! You can go many places with this character! Can't wait to see more of her!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Beth Anne! I'm workin' on it :)
DeleteI love your illustration!
ReplyDelete(and I tell you, I have a daughter named Julia, so, I like your picture tooooooo much, HA HA!!!!!! have a nice weekend!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi Roberto. I'm so pleased that you have a daughter named Julia...and also pleased that you like this Julia! I hope you have a nice weekend, too :)
Delete'Julia is finding that the world goes all soft and quiet when she puts the hat on.'
ReplyDeleteThat is just lovely.
S., I knew you would think so about that. xo
DeleteHi beth. I am still smiling at Julia in her hat, and your description of her intimate thoughts as she wears The Hat. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Kath. I'm glad Julia, with her thinking cap, makes you smile :)
DeleteLOVE! How cute is that!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Lisa! I do think she got a notch or two cuter than the previous version :)
DeleteHer little personality is coming to the fore.
She looks much happier than she did in the first version. She's very cute and you can see that she's proud and feels a bit taller. I love that sneeky hitchhiker!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Koosje! I think you are quite right--she is happier and definitely more satisfied. It's interesting how characters develop, isn't it?
DeleteJulia is finding that the world goes all soft and quiet when she puts her goose hat on. She doesn't hear people joking she is a bit of a silly goose. Her sensitive ears gets comfortably warm and she only sees the lips and mouth of people moving without actually hearing them. Julia needs to stay in this quite and peaceful world a few minutes per day because ever she was born she is surrounded by 7 noisy brothers and 3 demanding sisters. This is her Zen-moment. It makes her smile blissfully.
ReplyDeleteLove it!
DeleteSeriously adorable! That face is too much. And the hat continues to be completely fabulous, of course. That is one charming kid.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Cindy. She sure is growing on me :)
DeleteI love her rosy cheeks and her good-natured self-confidence. She is someone who'd say, "Hi, wanna be friends?", and be perfectly fine if you didn't.
ReplyDeleteYou've got her pegged! That's Julia, all right. How else could it be that she would put on such a chapeau? :)
DeleteLove Julia's hat, do you think she would lend it to me...I would love to be taller :)
ReplyDeleteI'm afraid I get first dibs, Catherine...
Deleteor maybe we should have another one made, and we can be taller together ;)
I think I'd like one of those hats too, it looks so comfortable!
ReplyDeleteYup. Me too :)
DeleteOld snake ears has eaten Henny OMG!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteCan you hear me laughing? You should, cuz I am laughing really LOUD!
DeleteHello Elizabeth Rose
ReplyDeleteJulie looks so content and has that expression of not having any worries whatsoever.
May her life and yours always be beautiful
Helen xx
And yours, too, Helen! Thank you <3
DeleteJulia is lovely from her snugly tied neck laces to her perfectly turned out left foot. I am smitten and await further Julia tales.
ReplyDeleteI am so glad, Camille, that you are smitten with Julia! As for her tale, she will have to wait a little bit until I get Henny off the ground :)
DeleteThanks for stopping by!
Lovely!! I like it! I've also participated IF!
ReplyDelete<3
RocÃo C.
Thank you! I like your TALL Alice! :)
DeleteI'm glad you made use of the hilarious hat horns and placed a little bird. The girl's expression is priceless. I don't know how you do that!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Sharon! I think a bunny may have misplaced his hat ;)
DeleteAs for the expression-- it always amazes me how one or two little strokes can say so much. I think it's why I love illustrating!
I am with you there is something in her expression and her posture that is at another level in this version. Her cheeks are pretty good too! The little bird sort of sneaks up on you in this illustration, julias face pulls you in so much that it takes a moment for your eyes to follow that lovely hat up and notice it, I like that. It invites you to stay longer with the drawing and feel some of the surprise julia will feel when she discovers it.
ReplyDeleteHi Alicia. I like how you've articulated what's going on with Julia. Julia will be in for a little surprise ;)
DeleteThanks for stopping by!
Hi Elizabeth!
ReplyDeleteJulia is adorable!cute little character. :)
Have a wonderful week!
Hi Marisa! I'm so glad you like her :)
DeleteI hope you have a wonderful week, too !
Julia had better never take her hat off; she might have a shock when she realises that she is transporting a stowaway.
ReplyDeleteIf I were Julia, I would keep the hat on just to ensure some peace and quiet. As for her stowaway--well, I haven't figured that part out yet ;)
DeleteThanks, as ever, U., for stopping by! xo
Thanks for stopping by. I really like the simplicity and fun in this illustration. It contrasts so nicely with the sketch from the Da Vinci art in your previous post. I give a high grade to both, but, then, I'm not the teacher.
ReplyDeleteI'll take your grades any day, Leenie :)
Delete...and thank YOU for stopping by !
I still love the hat (and all her other colorful clothes).
ReplyDeleteLove, Love, Love Julia! I just had to laugh with joy because she is so stinking cute! Thanks for the wonderful uplift in my day. You have a gift and I am so glad you share it with others.
DeleteThank you, Brigitte! I still love her hat, too (I wish I had one).
DeleteGlad you stopped by :)
Dewayne-- Thank you so much for your kind comment. I am really flattered that she gave you a little lift!
DeleteShe's just so cuddly and lovable in her yellow sweater with her pink cheeks. The hat is so "you" and very much why I love your work! Just a little side note: I enjoy the aviary in your head. Birds are so much fun when they show up in your art. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Laurie! Yes, birds do seem to show up with some frequency. Not sure why...but, maybe like Julia, I should have my head examined ;)
DeleteThis is great improvement! Glad to see that this character is evolving. I really think you have something here, and it's much more "kid friendly" than my straw head angle ;-)
ReplyDeleteAhhh...but I DO think it would be fun to put an illo spin on your version!
DeleteAw, you're far too kind! :-)
DeleteOh Julia is lovely! And her hat is simply GORGEOUS! I want one!!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Claire. I think I want one, too :)
Deleteshe looks satisfied that her hat draws positive attention away from the rest of her wardrobe... she tried, to no avail, with the stockings --but boy! When that had went on she was a star, and she knew it.
ReplyDelete.
You are quite right...her fashion strategy seems to be working ;)
DeleteI like this girl...she is so confident! I think you need to produce her hat. I am sure it would be the next big thing in fashion!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Theo! Re: the hat--I think you might be right ;)
DeleteShe looks adorable with the hat!!
ReplyDelete♥
Thanks, Ana! <3
DeleteWonderful hat. Love, love, love it!
ReplyDeleteRita! I'm so glad you do! Thanks for stopping by.
DeleteIt is a very magnificent hat!
ReplyDeleteI think we all should have one, don't you? ;)
DeleteLove her. I want to be her. All hail Julia!
ReplyDeleteI want to be her too. Things are a little too noisy around here. ;)
DeleteThanks for stopping by!
That expression on her face! So happy and contented and wondering a little why everyone is staring at her. Must be her fantastic hat they are admiring. Yes?
ReplyDeleteYes, I do think so :) There's nothing like a good hat for a little attention--just ask the Queen ;)
DeleteHello again, Julia. HELLO! Julia?
ReplyDeleteShe's not responding.
Hi Pia! Julia is reveling in her little quiet world. :)
DeleteOh my goodness, it's darling! Who would not want a hat like that--the world going all soft and quiet. And company to boot! You're a genius, Elizabeth. :)
ReplyDeleteJayne--what a wonderful compliment! Thank you so much. :)
DeleteJulia is darling, unique and her own self. I love characters like that.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much!
Deleteshe is adorable.... well done!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Melissa!
DeleteI LOVE your quirky characters Elizabeth, she is so cute!
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you think she is, Amanda. Thanks so much!
DeleteThis is my first time here. Just clicked over from Suze's place. Nice to meet you! I absolutely adore this little Julia AND her hat. Adorable!
ReplyDeleteHello Ruth! So glad you stopped by :) and I'm so glad you like Julia.
DeleteShe's 100% adorable!!!! (Also hopped in from Suze's blog :)) For a long time I was torn between becoming an illustrator or a writer. I ended up feeling a stronger pull towards writing (less messy, ha!) But I admire you for pursuing such a hard profession. You obviously have a lot of talent!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Lorena. I think writers are great :)
DeleteShe's adorable...especially *with* her little hitchhiker!!!
ReplyDeletexo J~
(This is the best weather EVER!)
Thanks :)
DeleteBest weather--yes...so odd not to have rain for so long!
I really like Julia with the bird hat, and she seems very happy, too. No wonder the world goes quiet. Her expression and posture is very cute. A great character you have created!
ReplyDeleteI like this girl very much. She looks like she would be a great friend for me! Oh, do pop over to my blog today for a little surprise :D
ReplyDeleteYou are so sweet :)
